NFL in Ghana??

Yeah, you read that subject line correctly... and yes... this week i got to meet some NFL Players and play some American Football with them.

So Ezekiel "Ziggy" Ansah is a Defensive End for the Detroit Lions... He also went to BYU... but it turns out, he was born here in Ghana and his family lives just a ward over from mine... but he does a training camp with some of the schools here every year and this year, they asked some of the local missionaries (me) to come help. We woke up that morning and it was pouring rain... but they didnt cancel the camp... so we went to the school that was hosting it, and there were about 500 kids there... so we tried to teach them some fundamentals of football and just have fun. The camp ended with a giant flag football tournament and the missionaries were all the coaches.... so i coached a football team this week. too bad that the players didnt listen to me and we lost, but it was all for fun. Under Armor donated a bunch of gear that the players gave to the missionaries for helping out so i got a super nice pair of football cleats!

Ziggy also brought some of his friends that played in the league, so Tony Simmons (he was a wide receiver for the New England Patriots) and Joique Bell (a Running back for many different teams) were both there.... so I got to become pretty good friends with 3 NFL players in one day... Joique even gave me a pair of Ziggys cleats after the camp was all over. so i ended the day with 2 pairs of super nice cleats... one size 13 and one size 15.5 (they dont fit me, but they are super cool, so i am totally keeping them as a souvenir)

As we were going to the Doctors office afterwards for Elder Hayes' appointment, we walked past a sports shop and guess who was up front playing ping pong?? Asamoah Gyan (dont worry, i didnt know who it was either)... but my companion and everybody else that i was with recognized him... so we snuck and took a picture of him. That was 4 famous people that we saw on saturday.

Last Monday night we had one of the biggest rain storms that Ghana has had in the past 5 years. The wind blew fences down and roofs off and made it more of a hurricane than a rain storm. But the rain was so much that it flooded in all of our windows and doors.... And having the luck that i generally have, the rain flooded in both of the windows above my bed... so i put my mattress on the floor of the hallway and slept there. the next day, we spent about half of the day trying to clean up and mop up all of the water...

Ghana is a crazy place. I wont deny that. But, i am starting to love it. It only took 3 months and a week.... well, i havent had any big testimony building stories this week, but i will try to get one this week... so i guess, until next week right??
Love,
Elder Williams

I apologize, i completely spaced attaching the pictures.... sorry... here they are.

the black Under Armor cleats are mine, and the other ones are ziggys... they have been worn twice ever... once in a game, and then once on saturday...

Love,
Elder Williams

so the Super tall guy is Ziggy.
The guy in the funny hat is Tony Simmons.
The guy playing ping pong is Asamoah Gyan.
and the other guy is Joique Bell.

Love,
Elder Williams

**note from mom: we can't open the pictures he went..it just keeps coming up "error" **

deodorant and peyton... :)

Hey everyone! this week has been a whole lot of fun, with a whole lot of homesickness.... i hear thats normal for how long i have been out, but i will keep working on it... life is super hot here... and i know that it wont cool down at all.. oh well! i better just get used to the heat right??

But this morning we went and biked up the mountain again...

we left at 4 am yet again and made it up to the summit just in time for the sun to rise... (about 5:45) so that was cool! The sun rise is always better from the top of a mountain.. trust me on that one...

I also found some new deodorant to use... it says Williams on it, so the lady gave me the "williams" discount... it was pretty cool....
i also found a cool kind of soda that i have never seen before... it is a blackberry ginger ale...
it tastes really super similar to the black mountain dew... but it is pretty expensive, so i have only had it the one time... but you can find some of the coolest things for sale here in Africa... i also found an old Peyton Manning jersey... back when he played for the colts... so i had to buy it..... 1.because American football jerseys are pretty rare here and 2.it is peyton manning.. (granted, he did play rather poorly his last couple years)

I dont really have any cool stories... we have gotten a whole new teaching pool because my new companion said that the old ones werent progressing (they were he is just a..... ummm... special person;) ) so we have been working on that recently... umm... if any of you guys remember the one lady that we were teaching that got really super sick? well, she has recovered... not completely, but she is able to listen to our lessons again... so we have started teaching her again. I also found out that malaria is more common than i thought... i havent gotten it (and i pray that i dont) but we have a recent convert that got it this past week... ive heard it is like the flu back in the US... like most people get it once or twice a year, which is pretty scary....

as always, if you have any questions for me, i would love to answer them... but i hope you all have a great week!
